Elijah/ Elisha/ Ascension
Trinity Presbyterian Church Mercer, PA Here are miscellaneous Elijah lessons to build on... Workshops ideas included: Scripture: 1 Kings 17:1, 2 Kings 5:27, 2 Kings 9 Memory verses: Micah 6:8 “What does the Lord require of you? To act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” Matt. 6:33 “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.” Deut. 6:5 “Love the lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” ----------------------------------------------------------- Video Workshop Theme: Good vs Evil Objectives: Students will: 1. Learn that God wants us to worship only him not false Gods. 2. View the story of the prophet Elijah. Lesson: Watch the video Elijah (30 minutes, NEST videos "Animated Bible stories of the Old Testament") Stop it along the way and discuss sections. Remind the students that a prophet is a spokesperson for God. List the qualities (on the board) seen in the prophet Elijah. As a class answer the rhymes “Who Am I?” from page 33 of the workbook. Do the worksheet “Time To Rhyme” pg 35. (The workbook comes with the video.) End with a group prayer. ----------------------------------------------------------- Storytelling Workshop Theme: Difficulties Objectives: Students will: 1. Recognize that God’s covenant connects Abraham, Elijah and us. Lesson: Read a story book on the events of the Elijah story. [Exchange Volunteer's note: the writer recommended a web site for the story but it is no longer functioning.] Elijah had many difficult things to face in his life. He also had great faith in God. What difficult things do you face? How can your faith in God help you when these things happen to you? Play the memory game, page 23 from the video workbook (Elijah, NEST videos "Animated Bible stories of the Old Testament") End with prayer “Almighty God, your word says Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Help us remember that you will meet our needs if we ask in faith. Amen.” (Extra activity: Copy the sequencing cards from the Elijah workbook for each student. Have them cut them out and put them in order. Or make the copies larger and play as a class. Each student chooses a picture, one at a time put them in order and the student should tell what happened in his/her picture.) ----------------------------------------------------------- Video & Art Workshop Theme: False Gods vs People of Israel, or Then and Now Objectives: Students will: 1. Know God wants us to worship only him, not false Gods. 2. Recognize false gods people worship today. Lesson: Show a video clip from the series “That the World May Know”, Book 2, Lesson 7, on the worship of idols. Ask what we worship today? Think of the people you know. How do they spend their time…, their money… their talents? Are they content? Do they just want more? How about you? What do you worship? We have so much. Think of people who live in India, Haiti? Elijah was a prophet of God. God gave him words to say. That is the reason things happened as Elijah said they would. What do you think would be the differences between a prophet of God and a prophet of Baal? Ahead of time look up the verses in the Bible about false gods. Write them on cards. Have the students take turns reading them and discuss them. Use magazines and make headline collages that could be found in Elijah’s time or ours. ----------------------------------------------------------- Video Workshop Theme: Heroes Objectives: Students will: 1. Consider the role of a hero. 2. Imagine themselves as someone’s hero and what responsibilities go with that role. 3. Be reminded that we should not take honor or reward for what God has done using us as the tool. Lesson: Elijah was Elisha’s hero, mentor and friend. Watch the first section of the “Elisha” video. Do you have heroes or mentors you look up to? Why? What is it about them? Is there someone who looks up to you? What situations do you find yourself in where younger children might look up to you? Role play a few of the situations. Do one the bad way and one being a good example. Elisha asks for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit. As you watch the last section be thinking about what you might have asked for? Watch for the part where Elisha says never take honor or reward for the works of God. You are just his tool. Show the rest of the video. ----------------------------------------------------------- Cooking Workshop Theme: God’s Timing Objectives: Students will: 1. Experience that impatience is not helpful. 2. Recognize that God has wisdom in his timing. Lesson: Leader should prepare a batch of cookie dough. Have the kids drop them and bake them. (Use too little time.) Be anxious and take them out too soon. While waiting, review the story with the sequencing pictures. The cookies should not be good. Make another batch using the correct time. Ask if students can remember times when Elijah was impatient. He wanted to do it now, not wait. What might have happened? When the cookies are done pray “Bless this bunch as we munch our lunch.” enjoy them together. Be reminded that God has wisdom in his timing. Create an ad campaign or billboard or commercial using contemporary situations where people haven’t waited for God’s timing. ----------------------------------------------------------- Science Workshop Theme: Archeological Dig Objectives: Students will: 1. Have fun reviewing the story. 2. Think about difficult questions they would like to ask God. Lesson: Teacher dresses in a costume of the Indiana Jones type. Use the Children and Worship sandbox and hide objects before class. Give each student a chance to look through the sand for one object, then, try to identify it and relate it to part of the story. piece of pottery- oil jewel- King’s crown cloth- Jezabel feather- raven etc. wet sand- sacrifice match-fire rock- wilderness hiding place child’s toy- boy … In a dig we try to use the things we find to understand history and the people of another time. We don’t know all the answers and sometimes it is very frustrating. Archeologists would like to be able to ask someone for answers. There are big questions about life that we don’t understand too. Today we will write letters to God asking our big questions. Give each student index cards and a pencil to write their letters to God. Read them aloud to the group when everyone is finished. Give them to Bill and perhaps he or his adult class will be able to answer some of them. ----------------------------------------------------------- Games Workshop Theme: Magic vs. Faith Objectives: Students will: 1. Consider the differences between magic and faith. 2. Recognize that God does not do magic. Lesson: Visit the opening time the week before class and ask the students if they know some magic tricks. If so, ask them to please practice them and bring them to class. Call and remind those who said yes on Saturday. The teacher should prepare some to perform as well or bring in a guest. How does a magic trick work? (Slight of hand, tricks, imagination, cover-ups.) What is the difference between magic and faith? Faith is a mystery but not magic. Elijah and Jesus both ascended into Heaven. Review the Bible story with the class. What are the differences and similarities. Look up Bible verses that speak of faith causing miracles or acts of God. By definition a miracle is an unusual happening, one that goes against the normal laws of nature. Miracles are done by the power of God. Faith is belief or trust in God; knowing that God is real, even though we cannot see him. Play a game with questions about the lessons. Use the Jeopardy boards or the Wheel of Faith. --- Exchange Volunteer modified title for clarity. And at a later date added the list of workshops and removed a non-functioning link. And at a still later date, modified the title again. This message has been edited. Last edited by: CreativeCarol, |
