BIBLE STORY

Luke 17:11-19

MEMORY VERSE

Luke 17:15 – “Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice.”

Psalm 136:1 – “O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.”

GOALS/OBJECTIVES

Children will:

Find the story in Luke.

Explain the terms leper and Samaritan and understand that they were both labeled as outcasts in Jesus’ time.

Learn that Jesus’ love is for everyone, even outcasts.

Recognize that faith results in acts of obedience – doing what God asks.

Discover that when we show a wholehearted response to God’s love, such as by being thankful and worshiping, we become closer to God.

Learn the key Bible verse in their own words.

Review the Bible Story, Key/Memory Verse, goals and objectives, and commentary on the passage for the rotation “Jesus Heals Ten Lepers.”

BIBLE BACKGROUND ADDENDUM [Neil MacQueen]

Consider additional observations from the story “Jesus Heals Ten Lepers” to include in a study of the passage.

LESSONS/WORKSHOPS

ART [Carmen Peter]

Design wire sculpture figures to represent the lepers healed by Jesus.

BANNERS/TEXTILES [Jaymie Derden]

Construct a “Praise” banner by writing expressions of thanks on white cotton strips and attaching them to a pole.

CINEMA [Julie Burton]

Tell the Bible story “Jesus Heals Ten Lepers,” act out the account, videotape the performance, and play back the recording for the class.

Make s’mores in stages to illustrate that the “Tenth Leper” was only complete when he returned to say “Thank You” to Jesus.

DRAMA [Carol Hulbert]

Enact the Bible story to discover that the ten lepers were healed by doing what Jesus asked them to do but one leper grew closer to God by choosing to return to thank Jesus.

GAMES [Stephanie Smith]

Play games of “Leper Tag” and “Jesus, May I?” to learn that Jesus’ love is for everyone, even outcasts, and to recognize that faith results in acts of obedience.

MISSIONS [Kim Harding]

Write an acrostic of the word “HELP” to understand that Jesus’ healing grace is for everyone and to explore our universal call to support missions.

MUSIC [Julie Burton]

Learn the background of the hymn “Now Thank We All Our God” and relate the theme of praise during difficult times in life to the Bible Story of “The Ten Lepers.”

SCIENCE [Carmen Peter]

Research Old Testament laws related to health, demonstrate handwashing procedures, and understand that Jesus is concerned about our physical health as well as our spiritual health.

STORYTELLING [Amy Crane]

Hear the story of Jesus healing ten lepers, review it by storyboard, and apply it through sharing personal stories focusing on accounts of being an outcast, welcoming an outcast, and responding to God with thanks.
