PRESENTATION

Open – Introduction

Open the lesson by stating: There are alot of rules to live by, aren't there? What are some rules you have to follow? [List responses on newsprint/board.]

Say: In Jesus' time there were lots of rules. For example, someone with a skin disease, called a leper, would have to live away from other people. Let's imagine what that might be like. [Allow responses.].

Distribute Bibles.

Dig – Main Content

Today we are going to read about some people called lepers, and an amazing thing that happened to them. This story is found in the book of Luke, chapter 17. We'll start reading at verse 11. This story is called “Jesus Heals Ten Lepers.” Listen closely. If the children are able and willing, take turns reading. If they are not readers yet, have them follow along in their Bibles.

Ask:

Who were the people in this story?

Why were they so far from Jesus?

What did Jesus do for them?

What did Jesus tell them to do?

How many came back?

How did he show praise to God?

Explain to the children they will act out the story as you read it, and will make a video of their performance. Assign the parts. Act out the story and guide the process. When finished, play back the video.

Reflect – Closure

Ask:

How did it feel to be the lepers?

The one that came back?

How can we praise God?

Close in prayer.

ADDITIONAL SUGGESTIONS

Options

Show a clip from the movie "Chicken Little." He is shunned by the community until he hits the winning baseball pitch.

Or, show a clip from "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer"-- "I Am Not Just a Misfit."

Adaptations -- Older Children

Use the same opening. Then have the children write a script but use modern examples, such as people with HIV or AIDS. Use a chalkboard or newsprint to write modern ideas or create the script to read while they are being taped. Have them act it out; film them as they do it. If time, play back the video and discuss it.
