JESUS HEALS TEN LEPERSPASSAGE Story: Luke 17:11-19 Key/Memory Verses: Luke 17:14; Psalm 136:1 PURPOSE Objectives for Rotation See Bible Background. Objectives for Cooking Workshop In this workshop, children will explore how the tenth leper’s response to Jesus helped to make him whole. Children will create “s’mores” in stages as an illustration of the concept. PREPARATION Read Bible Background. Materials List
Advance Preparation Requirements Practice making the s’mores to know how long it takes to melt 1) just the marshmallow, 2) the marshmallow and the chocolate together, 3) the entire s’more. Review the recipe for Indoor S’Mores. Ingredients 2 graham crackers, broken into halves 2 large marshmallows 1 (1.55 oz.) Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bar, broken into pieces Directions Place one graham cracker half on a paper towel or a microwave safe plate. Top with chocolate bar half and one marshmallow. Microwave at HIGH (100%) for ten to fifteen seconds or just until marshmallow begins to puff. Immediately top with second graham cracker half. Press together gently. Serve immediately. Repeat for each serving. Two servings. When setting up the room, keep the supplies in a box or bag so that the children cannot see all the parts of the s’mores from the beginning. PRESENTATION Open – Introduction Welcome the children warmly and open with a prayer. Invite the children to open their Bibles to Luke 17:11-19. If there are volunteers, encourage them to take turns reading the story to the class. When the students have finished reading or being read to, have them tell the story in their own words. Dig – Main Content Show the children the marshmallows only. Allow the children to suggest some ideas of what could be made in the kitchen with marshmallows. After a minute or so, tell the children that the class will be making s’mores today. Since the class won’t have time to make a fire to cook them, they will be using a microwave oven. Place the marshmallow on a microwave safe plate, and cook the marshmallow until is is hot and gooey, but not completely melted. Tell the children the first s’more is done and request a volunteer to eat the first s’more. Older children at this point will likely object, as this is not yet a “s’more.” Invite them to share what is missing. After they identify the other ingredients, bring out the chocolate bars that had been “forgotten.” Place a new marshmallow and some chocolate on a plate and microwave them just until messy. Offer this plate as a completed s’more as well. When they object again, or if they do not object, suggest that this is still missing something. At this point, return to a discussion of the story. Use a script such as: “In the beginning of our Bible story, there are ten lepers. God loves them as they are, in spite of their illness. But they are cut off from all other people -- they are incomplete. This marshmallow is a good thing, but if it is supposed to be a s’more, it is incomplete.” [Point out the plate with the marshmallow goo.] “Then Jesus comes along and heals them. And this is a marvelous thing, because it makes their bodies whole. And they run off to show themselves to the priest. But while things are much better for them, they are still not complete. In the same way our chocolate makes the marshmallow closer to a s’more, but it is still not complete.” [Point out the chocolate marshmallow mess.] “Finally, one of the lepers comes back to Jesus and says ‘Thank You!’ This leper recognized the need to express his gratitude to God, and that a person’s relationship with God is very important. And Jesus praises him for his faith.” [Hold out graham crackers, and place a new piece of chocolate and a marshmallow in between.] “Our graham crackers hold together the s’more; they make it complete. The one leper recognized that he needed Jesus to truly be complete, to be whole, to be well.” Work together to make complete s’mores for the entire class, and enjoy them as a group. Reflect - Closure Discuss with the children in what ways they might take God’s gifts for granted and forget to say thank you. In what way is their life improved when they remember to say thank you to God, and make God a part of their complete lives. Pray a circle prayer, with each child naming something they normally take for granted. SOURCE http://www.hersheys.com/recipes/recipes/detail.asp?id=2886 CONTRIBUTOR: Kim Trimboli |
