A Lesson written by Faith Herrera from: Grace Point Church 9750 Huebner San Antonio, TX 78240 Copyright 2008 Grace Point Church Permission to copy materials granted for non-commercial use provided credit is given and all cited references remain with this material. CELEBRATION STATION (Music Rotation): Children will learn that God looks at what is in a person’s heart and play the bells to Psalm 9:1, 2, 10. CONCEPT: God looks at what is on the inside of a person and not on the outside. SCRIPTURE: 1 Samuel 16:1-13, Exodus 30:23-29 MEMORY VERSE: “The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." 1 Samuel 16:7 (NIV) LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Children will: Know that David was chosen by God to be king based upon his heart and not his outward appearance. Identify ways that they can have a heart for God. Be challenged to look at others and themselves through God’s eyes. Be able to retell the story of Samuel anointing David. SUPPLIES: *Disney’s Beauty and the Beast DVD (1) set to play at 1:19:46 thru 1:22:58 *Bible *365 Bible Stories for Children p. 93-94(3) *2 bells (1 working and 1 broken or with the clapper taped to the side) *tables in a line facing the wall where the music chart is posted *color coded bells (need A is blue, C is red, D is orange, E is yellow, F is green, G is aqua) - 1 for each child in the class *large music chart of “Psalm 9:1, 2, 10” song(4) posted on the wall *CD player *CD: God’s Big Picture, track 15 - “Psalm 9:1, 2, 10” *a pointer. WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION: Welcome the kids and introduce yourself. Show the clip of the Beauty and the Beast from 1:19:46 thru 1:22:58 Ask the kids what made the beast turn into a man? (Belle falls in love with his heart...not what is on the outside.) The Bible Story we are learning about today is also about how God looks at our hearts. Our story comes from 1 Samuel 16. (Open your Bible.) I am going to read the story to you from this Bible. (Read Saul’s Disobedience and Israel’s Shepherd King from365 Bible Stories for Children p. 93-94). Discussion: What do you think Saul looked like? (tall, handsome, good-looking, etc.) Do you think that Samuel have been trying to find someone who looked like Saul to be Israel’s next king? (yes) What did God tell Samuel about finding the next King of Israel? (that he looks at what is on the inside of a person, not what is on the outside) What are some things that God might see on the inside of you that he wouldn’t like? (jealousy, lying, anger, being mean, etc.) What are some things that God might see in your heart that he would like? (love, respect, helpfulness, obeying, happiness or joy, sharing, etc.) Why do you think that God chose David to be the next King? (He had a heart for God. God liked what he saw on the inside.) Do you think that God could choose you to do a job for Him? What do you think He asks you to do? (Obey my parents. Help others. Tell others about Him.) APPLICATION Say: David loved God so much that when he became King, he wanted all of Israel to know and love God. So he wrote Psalms or songs for and about God. Today we are going to play bells to one of his songs - Psalms 9:1, 2, 10. Before we learn to play the bells, I wanted to ask you some questions about the bells.(2) Have two bells on the table in front of you: 1 that works and 1 that is either broken or that has the clapper taped to the side.) Who thinks that this bell will work the best (point to the working bell)? Why? Who thinks that this other bell will work the best (point to the broken bell)? Why? Ring each bell.) Which bell worked? (Show the kids the insides of the bells.) So you just learned that it’s the inside or the outside that makes a bell work? That’s right, just like in our story...the inside is what matters. Bells: (You need long tables set up with enough bells (mix of C, D, F, G, A, and E,) for each child to have one bell and all the children to be facing one way. They should be facing where you have posted the music chart on the wall. You will need a pointer, a CD player, and the CD God’s Big Picture, track 15.) Instruct the kids to stand behind a bell. Instruct the kids how to hold a bell against their collars at shoulder level to keep them silent. When you point to their color on the music, they play by ringing the bell one time away from their shoulders and then rest it once again on their shoulders. Play Psalm 9:1, 2, 10 (God’s Big Picture, track 15) and point to the correct words/chords on the music chart on the wall. (Taken from Gospel Light's God's Big Picture p. 478 - you will need to color code the chords yourself.) You will need to enlist help from the other adults in the room to get the kids playing at the right time. You may play multiple times or switch bells as long as the kids are engaged. NOTE: CLOSING OPTIONS –CHOOSE 1 BASED ON THE CLASS! *If the kids are engaged in playing the bells the entire time: Pray with the children, asking God to help them know that He is looking at their hearts and what they are like on the inside. Help them to remember that he has chosen each one of them for something very special. Turn the class back over to the shepherd. *If your kids are not engaged in playing the bells: GAME OPTION Say: To help you remember about what God sees on the inside of you we are going to play “Fruit Basket Turnover”. Game Instructions: Assign each child a fruit and sit them in a circle on the floor. Explain that when the farmer (person in the middle) calls out their fruit that they must switch places with the other fruit called out. The farmer will try to grab one of their seats. Remind kids to be kind - NO PUSHING, HITTING, etc. Before the Farmer calls out two fruits, he or she must say one way to show love for God or others. If the Farmer says, “Fruit Basket Turnover,” everyone must switch seats. Begin the game by being the Farmer yourself. CLOSING Pray with the children, asking God to help them know that He is looking at their hearts and what they are like on the inside. Help them to remember that he has chosen each one of them for something very special. Turn the class back over to the shepherd. References 1. Beauty and The Beast.
