Jesus Baptism & Temptation Background Information During the time when Herod was king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah. He was married to Elizabeth and they were both very old. Zechariah and Elizabeth lived good lives in God’s sight and fully obeyed the Lord’s law and commands. They had no children, which made Elizabeth very sad. One day Zechariah was burning incense at the Temple when he was visited by an angel of the Lord. The angel told Zechariah that his wife would bear a son and he was to name his son John. Zechariah questioned the angel because he didn’t believe he and Elizabeth could have a son because they were old. Since Zechariah did not believe the angel took away his ability to speak. When Elizabeth was 6 months pregnant her cousin Mary (who was pregnant with Jesus) came to visit. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and said, “You are the most blessed of all women, and blessed is the child you will bear. Luke 1:42 When John was born Zechariah was able to speak again and praised God. Zechariah prophesized about John, “You, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High God. You will go ahead of the Lord to prepare his road for him, to tell his people that they will be saved by having their sins forgiven.” Luke 1:76-78 As an adult John went throughout the land of the Jordon River preaching, “Turn away from your sin and be baptized, and God will forgive your sins.” Luke 3:3 John said to all who came to be baptized, “I baptize you with water, but someone is coming who is much greater than I am.” Luke 3:16 After all the people had been baptized Jesus came to John to be baptized. John didn’t believe he was worthy to baptize Jesus, but Jesus said that it was God’s requirement that John baptize him. So John baptized Jesus and while they were praying heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit came down in the form of a dove, and a voice came from heaven “You are my own dear son, I am pleased with you.” Luke 3:22 The Bible tells us that after Jesus was baptized he knew he must carry out the plan of God. Jesus wanted to really think about what he was being called to do. He set out into the desert to spend time praying. It was hot. There were no trees or grass, no food to eat, nothing but miles of hot desert. Jesus knew he was different, and he knew what was in store for him. It was important that he pray, and of course, accept God’s plan. Satan was lurking, waiting for Jesus to weaken. He was the enemy of God, and did not want Jesus to worship God. Satan takes this time to tempt Jesus, suggesting to him that if he really is the Son of God, why not turn rocks into bread. Jesus does no succumb, but instead replies with answers that reflect his love and faithfulness for God. Satan goes away and angels come to help Jesus. The message that we hear is that through even the toughest times, we must never lose our faith and trust in God. The message to the children is that temptation will always be around us and that we must not lose sight on how God would like us to respond. This is not an easy lesson to learn. Especially in this day and age where we are surrounded by material items and the quote “He who dies with the most toys wins” is very real. There are two important lessons to remember here. One, Jesus took the time to be alone in prayer. How often do we take time to be alone with God. You can suggest to the children that though God is with them all of the time, they can willingly spend time with God whenever and where ever they choose-not just in church. Secondly, Jesus would not bend to the will of Satan. As said earlier, we are constantly tempted. Whether it is fresh cookies that we have been asked not to touch, not peeking at presents, a personal secret shared by a friend, and the list goes on. How can we teach our children about the very things we ourselves can be tempted by? By example, and of course by inviting conversation on the subject. Children like to hear that you can make the same mistakes too. The Bible says that God “will not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” God allows humans to be tempted as part of the natural order (It builds character and self-control) but God will not tempt us into sin. =========================================== Exploratorium - Bible Skills & Games Exploring God’s Word Jesus’ Baptism and Temptation GRADES 1st, 6th, 5th, 4th Thank you very much for offering to share your gifts and time with the students in the BLAST program. Let your imagination, enthusiasm and love for the Lord show through you in your classroom. Below is information, both for you as the teacher and about the lesson plan. Please feel free to use these plans and adapt them to your teaching style. If you have any questions, please contact either Carol or Grace in the Church School Office. Information for the Teacher Exploratorium Focus: This classroom will focus on developing Bible skills (Exploring God’s Word). Every rotation will include Hands-on Bible time, a memory verse/Bible story game and a short quiz at the end to receive a special item from the treasure chest. The goal is for the students to learn about God’s word and have a lot of fun doing that. We will be using the Good News Bible in the classroom (which is the same version of the Bible they receive in 3rd grade). Please use the Good News Bible to read the chosen Bible story from. Using the Bible and learning to listen to the Bible is key to this classroom. The classroom also has a copy of the Children’s Bible for a different way to enhance the story time. The Children’s Bible provides the text in more of a condensed, story-telling method. Over the course of the Church School year, we want the students to learn about the importance of the Bible (it is God’s words and teachings to us), how the Bible can help us be better Christians (by following his directions), and about the different books in the Bible. For an outline of the Bible learning objectives by grade, please refer to last page of this lesson plan. By understanding these objectives, it will allow you to tailor your lessons for the individual grades. Please share your own experience and habits about using the Bible with the class. Thank you for being part of sharing and teaching the Bible to the students. Lesson Overview: Jesus’ Baptism and Temptation Bible Story: Matthew 3:13-4:11 Memory Verse: Matthew 3:17 (Good News Bible) Then a voice said from heaven, “This is my own dear Son, with whom I am pleased.” This story covers both the promise of baptism and the fighting of temptation. The activity portion of this lesson will focus on making the right choices. The memory verse reminds us that God sent us Jesus to be with us and help us through temptation and make the right choices. This is a great lesson to have a meaningful discussion on what is right and wrong. Lesson Objectives: (What you want the kids to learn) · For the students to understand that baptism is the sign and seal of God’s grace and covenant in Christ. · For the students to know that God calls them to turn away from dishonest, disobedient and sinful lives. · For the students to be able to retell the major points of the story. · For the students to learn the memory verse. · For the students to learn where Matthew is in the Bible. Lesson Activities: (Brief description of what will be done) · Temptation in the room · Memory verse in sign language · Hands-on Bible time · Making choices game · Journaling · Class quiz Lesson Plan Opening Welcome: Welcome the children and introduce yourself. Call the children by name. Have them wear their nametags. Nametags are located in the tote box and the shepherds are responsible for giving them out. Attendance: The Shepherd will be responsible for this. Include the shepherd in class, in discussion and prayer time. Set up temptation in the room… - table set with cookies and a sign, “Please do not eat” - cover something with a sheet and have a sign, “Please do not peek” - on the white board write, “Please do not erase or write on this board” - or come up with a few of your own Introduction: (What teacher says to class to frame the lesson) (Pass out the cookies to eat while you sit and talk.) What is temptation – testing, trying, enticing to evil. How did they handle the temptations in the room? How can we rely on God to help us through life’s temptations (the memory verse)? What promise is made when you are baptized? These are the different items to discuss and look at today when reviewing the Bible story. Memory Verse: Matthew 3:17 (Good News Bible) Then a voice said from heaven, “This is my own dear Son, with whom I am pleased. Spend a few minutes and teach the class the memory verse in sign language. The sign language instructions are included in this folder. If you would like someone to review the signs with you before class, please contact Linda Klug. Worship Time Light a candle: We will now enter into our Worship Time. This candle that I light represents the light of Christ who is always in our midst. This is a quiet time for us to focus on the Word of God. Opening Prayer: “Heavenly Father, at Jesus’ baptism we heard you tell the world that he is your beloved child. Lord God, help us to live as your children, too. Amen.” Collect Offering: Now we will pass the basket to collect the offering. Don’t worry if you don’t have anything for the basket today. Whatever is given helps the church in many ways, including helping to buy things to make BLAST happen as well as helping others in our community and around the world. Hands-on Bible time Make sure every student has a Good News Bible to use for this exercise. Before you open up the Bible, explain about the difference between the Old and New Testament sections. Show how the Bible starts back at page number 1 for the New Testament section. Review the Books of the New Testament, by either the Table of Contents, Books of the Bible poster or The Books of the Bible song on the We Sing CD. The book of Matthew is one of the four books of Gospel. The word Gospel means “good news”. The Gospels tell the good news about Jesus’ birth, life, death and resurrection that provides eternal life to everyone who will believe. Some of the stories are the same in these four books of Gospel. After you read the story, talk about Jesus’ baptism and how God offers us a picture of His love for all his children. Baptism is a time for declaring and renewing our faith in God and our commitment as the church of God to care for all people. The symbol of the water is the sacramental sign of God’s grace making all things new. Bible Story Time: With their Bibles open to Matthew, start the story: Matthew chapter 3:13-4:11 (Good News Bible) Children’s Bible 250 & 252 (reference) For the younger grades, read them the story. The older students can read the story to themselves. Closing Prayer: Dear Lord, as we enter into our activity time, please keep our hearts and minds open to hear you speaking to us. Amen. Extinguish the candle Activity Time Making Choices game Pick up the Kid’s Choices game from the Church School office. To expand the game so that all students can play, break the class into teams (between 3 to 6 teams). Each student on the team will take a turn being the captain and answering the question for the team. You can expand the board by either putting it on an overhead or making it out of construction paper on the floor of the room. (Putting the board on the floor would be a lot of fun for the younger grades). One player at a time will pick a dilemma card and answer it with one of the twenty principles. Then all players can discuss what principle fits the best and then call for a vote. (There is no right or wrong answer). Complete instructions and all the cards are in the game box. Exchange Volunteer - Note: The original poster has been contacted but did not respond. There is no further information available about the Making Choices game mentioned in the Bible Skills and Games workshop. Suggest using the following: The New Kid's Choices Game, Cook Communications, ISBN: 9834500890. Description: OK, you find your sister's diary unlocked. Are you going to read it? This situation and other updated dilemmas and questions will help your 6- to 12-year-olds deal with challenging real-life issues and apply biblical principles to everyday situations. Designed for 3 to 10 players. Journaling Ask the students to journal about something they found meaningful, surprising or interesting in today’s class or pose a reflective question as a journaling topic. (Journals are kept in the shepherd’s box.) Reflective Questions: · Where were you baptized? · What does baptism mean to you? · How do you handle temptation? Class quiz: To review with the class some of the major points they learned, have the class answer the questions listed below. This will be the last activity before the students leave the classroom. After they have answered the questions, have each student pick an item from the treasure chest. · Who can recite the memory verse? · Where is the memory verse found in the Bible? · Tell me about the story. · Where is story found in the Bible? · What type of book is the story found in? (Gospel) Additional Activities: · reading books (in the Church School cabinet) · games/puzzles (in the Church School cabinet) · activity sheets (in the shepherd’s box) · plan a game of hang man with words from lesson In closing, express how you enjoyed being with their class today and you hope they can come back to BLAST next week. Preparation for Class Supplies provided and located in room: (What teacher needs for lesson) · Good News Bible for students · Treasure chest (actually just a basket) Preparation Needed: (What teacher needs to do before class begins) · Bring out a Good News Bible for every student for the Hands-on Bible time (from the Church School cabinet in the room). · Bring out the Treasure Chest (basket from the Church School cabinet in the room), so the students can choose an item after the short class quiz, right before the end of the class. · Set up “temptations” in the room. Bring in cookies for the class. · Review the memory verse game and learn it in sign language. · Pick up the Kid’s Choices game from the Church School office. Review the instructions and become familiar with the game. Determine if certain dilemma cards are more appropriate for different age groups. Choose what type of game board you will use (either make an overhead or squares out of construction paper for the floor). Check with Carol if you would like an overhead projector for your class (at least the week before your rotation starts). · Available in the Church School cabinet are the Wee Sing Bible Songs vol. 1 CD, songs number 21 and 22 “The Books of the Bible” and the Church School songs tape which includes the memory verse song for this rotation. THANK YOU again for taking your time to teach this BLAST rotation. Activity: Baking Corn Bread Supplies provided and located in room: All supplies can be found in the refrigerator, freezer or white cabinet. Preparation Needed: Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Grease 2-8 inch square pans. Lesson Plan Opening Welcome the children and introduce yourself. Call the children by name. Have them wear their nametags. Nametags are located in the tote box and the shepherds are responsible for giving them out. Attendance: The Shepherd will be responsible for this. Include the shepherd in class, in discussion and prayer time. Introduction: Today we will learn the story of Jesus and temptation. You will find in the story that Satan tried to tempt Jesus and asked him to turn stones into bread. You will see how Jesus’ reacted. But first we will go to the kitchen to make Corn Bread, Jesus fasted when he went to the desert, that means he went without food for 40 days. Activity Time: You need to double this recipe to accommodate a big class. Split the group in two and have the Shepherds help with this. It is best (from experience) to pre-measure all ingredients. However, you may wish to let the older children do their own measuring. Instructions: Corn Bread and Honey 1 cup all purpose flour 1 cup cornmeal 2 tsp baking powder ½ tsp baking soda ¼ cup brown sugar ½ cup milk ½ cup plain yogurt 1 egg, slightly beaten ¼ cup butter, melted Preheat oven to 425 and grease an 8 inch square pan. In a large bowl, mix the flour cornmeal, baking powder, baking soda, and brown sugar. In a separate bowl, whisk the milk, yogurt, egg and melted butter together. Gradually add this mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Pour into the prepared pan and bake 15-20 minutes. Provide Honey for topping. Move back to room 304 for the remainder of class, the shepherd can keep an eye on the corn bread and bring it to the classroom when it is done. Worship Time Light a candle: We will now enter into our Worship Time. This candle that I light represents the light of Christ who is always in our midst. This is a quiet time for us to focus on the Word of God. Opening Prayer: Gracious God, Help us to keep our eyes and ears opened to Your Word. Amen. Memory Verse: Matthew 3:17 Then a voice said from Heaven, “This is my own dear Son, with whom I am pleased.” Bible Passage/Story: The Children’s Bible #252 “Temptation” This same story is being covered in each rotation. If this is the 3rd or 4th week of the rotation, keep in mind that the children have heard the story 2 or 3 times already. They should be able to retell the story in their own words. You may want to choose a different way to present the story in the last 2 weeks of the rotation. If you choose to read the story from the Bible, distribute Bibles to the students and have them locate the story in the Bible and follow along as you read. If this is the first week of the rotation, read the background information to the class so the children can familiarize themselves with an overview of the entire story. After covering the background information, continue on with the part of the story assigned to this rotation. For the this rotation, different workshops are hearing different parts of the story, so take time with the story. It is not repeated in the other workshops. If you choose to read the story from the Bible, distribute Bibles to the students and have them locate the story in the Bible and follow along as you read. We are cooking bread because Jesus is being asked to turn stones into bread. Share with the children that in the days of Jesus, they would have eaten locusts in the desert. Locust had fat and protein. They most likely would have covered them with honey to remove the bitter taste. Collect Offering: Now we will pass the basket to collect the offering. Don’t worry if you don’t have anything for the basket today. Whatever is given helps the church in many ways, including helping to buy things to make BLAST happen as well as helping others in our community and around the world. Closing Prayer: Thank You God for these gifts we receive. Help us to use them to Your glory. Amen. Closing Time Reflective Questions: 1. What did Satan ask Jesus to do? 2. Why did he ask them to do this? 3. Why didn’t Satan want Jesus to worship God? 4. Have you ever been tempted? When or Why? 5. Why would turning a rock into bread be tempting? (because Jesus was hungry) 6. Can you avoid temptation? If yes, how? If no, what ways can you get through it. Journaling: Ask children to journal about something they found meaningful, surprising or interesting in today’s class. If you have a younger class, you should provide them with guidance regarding what they could journal about. If there is time, you could brainstorm with the class one or two important things you learned about today and write those on the board. You could choose to write the memory verse on the board (including reference) or you could write one or two partial sentences on the board for the children to finish. Remember that first graders are just learning to write sentences and you could also give them an idea of a picture to draw. For example for younger grades (1st – 2nd), ¨ Copy down the memory verse ¨ Draw a picture of - or – ¨ Create an idea of your own. For older grades (3rd – 6th), ¨ Write about how you felt when - or - ¨ Use one of the reflective questions. – or - ¨ Create an idea of your own. Introduction: Today we will be hearing the story of the Baptism of Jesus. After hearing the story, we will be making a craft to help us remember some of the symbols of Jesus and our memory verse. Memory Verse: Review the memory verse for this rotation using one of the tips in your folder. Matthew 3:17 Then a voice said from heaven, “This is my own dear Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Worship Time Light a candle: We will now enter into our Worship Time. This candle that I light represents the light of Christ who is always in our midst. This is a quiet time for us to focus on the Word of God. Opening Prayer: Lord, we are here today to continue to learn about You, Your Son, and Your awesome love for us. As we hear the story of Jesus being baptized, we think about what it means to be a follower of God. We pray that you are with us today and always. Amen. Bible Passage/Story: Matthew 3:13 – 17; Children Bible in 365 Stories, Story #250 In this rotation, some of the workshops are telling the Baptism story and some are telling the Temptation story. If this is the 3rd or 4th week of the rotation, keep in mind that the children have heard the story already. They should be able to retell the story in their own words. You may want to choose a different way to present the story in the last 2 weeks of the rotation. Consider using maps, God’s Story Time props, felt board characters, puppets, etc. to tell the story. If this is the first week of the rotation, read the background information to the class so the children can familiarize themselves with an overview of the entire story. After covering the background information, continue on with the part of the story assigned to this rotation If you choose to read the story from the Bible, distribute Bibles to the students and have them locate the story in the Bible and follow along as you read. Closing Prayer: Dear Lord, as we enter into our activity time, please keep our hearts and minds open to hear you speaking to us. Amen. Extinguish the candle Activity Time Instructions: ¨ Review the meanings of the Christian symbols – lead a discussion on some of the many symbols of Jesus. You may choose to ask the students about symbols they know about, or show the symbols and ask what they think they mean. Keep in mind that some symbols have many meanings (ex. Dove can represent the Holy Spirit as in today’s story. It can also represent the end of flood in the Noah story.) ¨ Trace the patterns on construction paper. Each word of the memory verse will be written on one traced pattern, so make sure the students make enough. Encourage the students to use as many different patterns as possible. ¨ Cut out the traced patterns. ¨ Write one word from the memory verse on each cut out piece. Since the mobile can be seen from both sides, write the words on each side of the cut out piece. ¨ Punch a hole in the top of each piece and add a length of yarn or string. ¨ Hand out pre-cut pieces of tag board. Have the students write “JESUS” in large print on the tag board. ¨ Attach the cut out pieces to the tag board using staples, tape or punched holes. ¨ Attach a piece of string or yarn to the top of the tag board for hanging. Closing Time Reflective Questions: ¨ Why didn’t John want to baptize Jesus? (John felt that Jesus, as son of God, should have been baptizing him, not the other way around. John felt that Jesus “was better than he was.” Jesus allowing John to baptize him showed that we are all equal in God’s eyes.) ¨ There are many different symbols for Jesus – which are most meaningful or memorable to you? Why? ¨ What does today’s memory verse mean to you? Journaling: Ask children to journal about something they found meaningful, surprising or interesting in today’s class. If you have a younger class, you should provide them with guidance regarding what they could journal about. If there is time, you could brainstorm with the class one or two important things you learned about today and write those on the board. For example for younger grades (1st – 2nd), ¨ Copy down the memory verse ¨ Draw a picture of some of the symbols of Jesus - or – ¨ Complete the sentence, “When I think of Jesus, I think of…..”. For older grades (3rd – 6th), ¨ Write about the meaning of one or more of the symbols of Jesus. - or - ¨ If you’ve been baptized, write about what it means to you to have been baptized.– or - ¨ If you haven’t been baptized, would you like to be? Why or why not? ================================ STAGES OF FAITH - DRAMA Baptism & Temptation of Jesus Information for the Teacher Worship Focus Stages of Faith will focus on Worship throughout the year. Closing Prayer: Dear Lord, as we enter into our activity time, please keep our hearts and minds open to hear you speaking to us. Amen. Extinguish the candle Activity Time Instructions: The students will view the movie, eat popcorn and be able to answer questions about the movie. Cue movie. Show the Video: Reflective Questions: Who appeared to Zacharius? Why? The angel Gabriel appeared to Zacharius, to tell him Elizabeth will bear a son and to call him John. He shall prepare the world for the coming of the Messiah. “Because you have not believed, you shall not be able to speak or hear”. When did Zacharius get his voice back? After John was born. John’s job was to do what? Prepare the way for the Lord. How did he do that? By preaching about God’s love and modeling that in his behavior. What did the Queen want to do about John the Baptist? Arrest him. How does John introduce Christ? “Behold, the Lamb of God.” What does Jesus ask John to do? Baptize him. What does John say? “I am not worthy—you must baptize me.” Jesus said that ‘no’ John must baptize him. Then what happens? God calls down from heaven, “This is my son, with whom I am well pleased.” What happened to John? He was arrested and killed by the order of King Herod. What did Jesus say about John the Baptist? “Among those born of women, there was not a greater prophet than John the Baptist.” Why do you think it was important to Jesus that he be baptized? Modeling what he is calling us to do. Journaling: Ask children to journal about something they found meaningful, surprising or interesting in today’s class or pose a reflective question (listed above) as a journaling topic Exchange Volunteer modified title of post for clarity and added summary of workshops.
