    Closing for all workshops:
    A. Explain how the activity pertains to the objective:
    B. Close with a prayer: (Example) Heavenly Father, we pray that you might use us as your instruments, as you did John the Baptist, to point others towards Jesus- your precious son.
Like John the Baptist, let us not see our own importance, but the one true importance in your Son. Thank you for giving us the greatest gift of love, your Son, Jesus whose birthday we celebrate soon. May we each be your instruments to witness about Jesus to the world. Amen

    Temple/ Witness Workshop (Art)

    Specific Lesson Objective(s):
 Through the study of John the Baptist, students will understand our need for repentance which prepares us to receive Jesus, the promised Savior.
 Students will understand how John the Baptist was a witness God created to prepare the way for Jesus, the savior
 Students will describe how a witness bracelet can show others what Christ means in our life
 Students will make witness chains and bracelets to use in their lives as a tool for pointing others towards Christ, the Saviour.

    Materials Needed:
    Bracelet cording
    Various pony beads
Strips of green and red construction paper- 24 strips for each child
    Staplers
Cut out gold stars for each child

    Sequence of Activities:
Do the Opening for all workshops (see above).

    Activity:
John the Baptist was sent by God to prepare the people's hearts to receive their Savior Jesus Christ. For them (and us) to receive the Messiah they (we) have to have repentant hearts and be truly sorry for our sins. John was also sent by God to witness about Jesus, that he truly was the Son of God. W also are to witness about Jesus to other people. John prepared the way for Christ. Now it is our turn. These witness bracelets are for you to share with the world. Be sure to tell everyone what they mean.

Make a witness bracelet out of pony beads. Tell the children what each color means so they can use it as a witness tool to other children and explain the meaning:

The Cording represents your life in Christ
red bead-the precious blood of Christ
White- the pure holiness of God
Dark green- evergreen- as God's love is ever present
Black- Our sinful dark lives without Christ
    Powder Blue- the eternal heavens
Lavender- the beautiful love of Christ
    Peach swirl- Faith in Christ
Pink- Hope- the promise of eternal life
Tan- Dust- Our bodies return to dust, but our soul is eternal in Christ.
    WWJD- What would Jesus do?

Make links out of the green and red paper and staple them into links to create an advent chain. Staple the star to the last link to represent the star that above Jesus that led us to Him. Each day of advent the children will take off a link of the chain until they get to the star on Christmas.

    Discussion Questions:
  • What will you say if someone asks you about your witness bracelet?
  • Do you think God has a purpose for you?
  • What is that purpose?

Do the Closing for all workshops (see above).

    John the Baptist Rotation
    Prophecy Workshop (Games/Puppets)

This workshop is for younger students.

    Specific Lesson Objectives:
 Through the study of John the Baptist, students will understand our need for repentance, which prepares us to receive Jesus, the promised Savior.
 The student will understand the meaning of the word prophecy as a foretelling of an event to come.
 The student will understand that the story of Jesus birth (the incarnation was foretold or prophesied in scripture hundreds of years beforehand.
 The student will understand that the birth of Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s promise and be reminded that despite our sinfulness, God always keeps His promises.
 The student will understand that repentance is necessary as foretold in prophesy and fulfilled in God’s promise, for His preparation for Jesus the Savior.

    Sequence of Activities:
Do the Opening for all workshops (see above).

    Activity:
    A. Have students read key bible verses (each student take one). (I would have these copied from the Bible ahead of time to hand out to students.)
Numbers 24:17- Fulfilled in Matt. 2:2-1
    Isaiah 7:14- Fulfilled in Matt. 1: 18-25
    Micah 5:2- Fulfilled in Matt 2: 1-6 & Luke 2:1-7
    Isaiah 11:1-3- Fulfilled in Matt. 1: 1-17 & 3:16
    Deuteronomy 18: 15-19- Fulfilled in John 7:40

    B. Have students play object identification game. Split group into teams of 2 people each. Blindfold 1 student. The other student must describe the following objects for the blindfolded student to guess. Give each leader 3 objects, than switch leaders so the leader is now blindfolded and guessing with three new objects. This is a little like prophesying because you can’t physically see the object.

    Objects:
  • Water (leader cannot use words water, or drink to describe).
  • A nail (cannot use word nail or hammer to describe).
  • Cross (Cannot use the word cross or hang).
  • Dove (cannot use the word dove or bird).
  • Fish (cannot use fish or pole to describe).
  • Sheep (can’t use sheep or shepherd).

The kids need to describe the objects in terms of their significance in the Bible and try and get the blindfolded person to guess what the object is.

    C. Younger children will study the time line
Exchange Volunteer notes: it said that "circles" were attached.
Have students first decorate and get pictures ready to be put in order.
Use puppet to tell story & create timeline.

    D. Do the Closing for all workshops (see above).

    John the Baptist Rotation
    Prophecy Workshop (Games)

This workshop is for older students.

Follow the same Sequence of Activities as listed for the Games/Puppets Workshop for younger students.

    C. Older children will play Wheel of Fortune:
    1. Divide children into two teams by counting off 1, 2, 1, 2, etc…
    2. Each team will take turns spinning the wheel to solve the puzzle on the board.
    3. Write appropriate blanks on board for the bible phrase and have children guess at letters to solve the puzzle (hangman style). If they guess the letter correct they get another turn. They can buy vowels for $200/ a piece. If they solve the puzzle they can spin again for extra points to answer the discussion question. Each team keep their own score on the board. Set timer for 20 mins. Final puzzle must be solved if timer goes off by going back and forth between teams to solve the puzzle.

    Bible phrases and discussion questions:
John baptized with water Bonus Question: What did Jesus baptize with? (The Holy Spirit)
Christ birth foretold Bonus Question: Name two books of the Old Testament that contained this prophecy? (Isaiah, Numbers, Micah, Deuteronomy)
Witness for Christ Bonus: Who is called to witness for Christ? (We are)
Repentance of Sins Bonus: Why should we repent? (We recognize & are truly sorry for our sins to prepare for forgiveness).
Born in a Manger Bonus: Why would the king of the world be born in a manger? (To show His humility)

    D. Do the Closing for all workshops (see above).

Exchange Volunteer Amy added summary of workshops and edited post formatting for clarity.
Exchange Volunteer Carol removed extensive Bible quotation (We just don't have room for that) and removed reiterated lesson portions.
