Audio Drama of
Daniel and the Lion’s Den By Sheila Butler [King tune] KING DARIUS I am King Darius. I am King over many lands. I have 120 Governors to watch over my lands and 3 Presidents to watch over the Governors. One of these Presidents is named Daniel. Daniel is my best worker, he does such a wonderful job I think I will make him in charge of my entire empire. [President tune] OTHER PRESIDENTS (Together) We are the other Presidents, we can’t allow the King to give Daniel all of that power, he would be in charge of us. (Alternate) We have tried to find something wrong but he is too perfect. We must find a way to use his religion to hurt him. (Together)Let’s go to the King and have him make a law to hurt Daniel. [King tune] KING DARIUS Yes, my Presidents, what can I do for you? [President tune] OTHER PRESIDENTS (Together) Long live the King! (Alternate) We, the Presidents and all of the Governors agree that you should make a law and punish those who break this law. For the next 30 days, no one should pray to any other God and should only make requests of you. If they break this law they should be thrown into the Lion’s Den. [Lions growl] Make this a law of the Medes and Persians and then it cannot be changed. [King tune] KING DARIUS I like the idea of everyone worshipping me, I will do it. For the next 30 days this law cannot be changed, anyone who prays to any other God will be put in the Lion’s Den. [growl] [Daniel’s tune] DANIEL I am Daniel and I cannot follow that law. I love my God and I will not worship the King. I will serve him faithfully and I will do my job but I will only pray to my God. I pray to him 3 times a day in my own house. [President tune] OTHER PRESIDENTS Look through the window, Daniel is praying to that God of his again. Let’s go tell the King. Finally we can get rid of Daniel and he won’t be put in charge over us. [King tune] KING DARIUS Yes, my Presidents, what can I do for you? [President tune] OTHER PRESIDENTS Daniel is not obeying your law. We saw him praying to his God. He does it right in front of his window in his house. The law says you must throw him to the lions. [growl] [King tune] KING DARIUS Oh, not my Daniel! There must be a way to save him. I don’t want him to perish, what have I done? [President tune] OTHER PRESIDENTS Don’t you remember King Darius, you made the law according to the law of the Medes and the Persians and because of this it cannot be changed, there is nothing you can do. We will go and get Daniel. [movement music] Daniel you are charged with breaking the King’s law and you will be thrown into the Lion’s Den [growl] [King tune] KING DARIUS Daniel, pray to your God to save you, there is nothing I can do, I must seal the stone door with my sign so that it cannot be moved. I am so worried, I cannot eat, I cannot sleep, Oh what will happened to Daniel. [Daniel tune] DANIEL Dear God, I have always been faithful to you and I always will pray to only you. If this is right, please save me from the lions [growl]. [King tune] KING DARIUS Oh, I have not slept all night, now that it is morning , I must go and check on Daniel. [movement music] (Calling) Oh Daniel, are you there? Did your God save you from the lions [growl]? (Silence for effect) [Daniel tune] DANIEL Long Live the King! God sent an angel to seal the lions mouth and they did not hurt me. [King tune] KING DARIUS Oh, this is wonderful news. I am so sorry Daniel. From now on you may pray to your God and only your God. I order all of the Presidents and their families to be thrown to the lions [growl, growl, growl] for plotting against Daniel. Make it known. From this time on, everyone in my kingdom will worship Daniel’s God because he is a great God and he saved him from the mouth of the lions. [growl] THE END This is based on the 6th Chapter of Daniel in the Bible. |

As the children arrive/openers: · Introduce yourself · The Shepherds will pass out stick on nametags today for the field trip, this will save having to collect them, use first names only. Each Shepherd is in charge of his/her class. · Talk quietly until everyone arrives, ask about summer etc. · Say a post communion prayer · Teach Lions, Lions song, have words on a flip chart. Telling the story: Have them find Daniel, Chapter 6 in the bible, older children can help younger children. Using Godly Play materials tell the story of Daniel and the Lions Den. See attached story. Explain that they will hear the story again in the car and will discuss some questions with their parents. When parents arrive, give each car a direction/question/tape packet. Responding to the story: We will caravan and visit the Exotic Feline Rescue Center to learn about Lions and other large cats. Afterwards we will picnic together at a nearby park. This week’s Journal question is : The children should spend a few minutes reflecting upon the morning’s lesson –some might want to draw a picture of Daniel with the lions, some may want to write down a time they had faith that everything would be o.k. · Shepherds will pass out journal papers and colored pencils for today at the picnic to be done while everything is being set out. These should be collected and given to Sheila. Take Home Message: God is always with us through our faith in him. Closing Prayer: Dear God, Thank you for bringing us all together today to learn about lions and the story of Daniel. Help us to find our faith in God. Amen. [He had men he called Presidents to look Over his lands.] Place a person at each group. [One was named Daniel. He was the King’s favorite. He was going to be given rule over all of the other Presidents.] Hold up Daniel above the others. [The others were jealous and tried to find out bad things about Daniel. Daniel was so good, they couldn’t find anything bad to use. They decided to force the King to make a new law.] Have the other Presidents group together in a huddle. [They went to the King and convinced him to make a law To have anyone who prayed to anyone besides the King be thrown Into the lions den to be eaten.] Have the Presidents go to the King. [The King made the law and Daniel knew it had been signed. Daniel still went into his house and prayed to God 3 times a day.] Have Daniel go to his village. Have the others close by watching Daniel. Did your God Protect you?” Daniel called back “O King Live Forever.” The King was so relieved and happy that Daniel was alive. ] Take Daniel out. The King had all of the people who told on Daniel thrown into the Lions Den.] Put the others in the Den and seal it shut. [Then the King said that everyone should Worship the God of Daniel.] Wonder questions to be asked afterwards. I wonder how Daniel felt when he was going to be made head of everything? I wonder how Daniel felt when the King made a law that he couldn’t pray to God? I wonder how Daniel felt when he was caught praying to his God anyway? I wonder how the King felt when he realized Daniel had to die because of a Law he had made? I wonder how the King felt when he had to seal the stone so no one could save Daniel? I wonder how the King felt when he found Daniel alive the next day? I wonder if you have very felt protected by God? I wonder how Daniel felt when the King ordered everyone to worship his God? I wonder how God felt? |

Lions, Lions
Chorus Lions, lions… Oh please let Daniel go Yeah yeah yeah yeah Lions, lions… Oh please let Daniel go Huh! Yeah yeah yeah yeah Well I heard a little story just the other day, a king told his people that to him they must pray. But a guy named Daniel said that God was his friend, so the king threw him in to the lion's den. Chorus Well you may think the lions ripped him up in shreds, but the Lord closed their mouths and sent them all to bed. In the morning when the king found him safe and sound, he said "Daniel you can pray to anyone as long as I'm around." Chorus Verses from Hilliard Presbyterian Church in Ohio, see http://www.sundaysoftware.com/lessons/biblewahoo.htm#anchor829444 The tune is the Pharoah, Pharoah song and the Chorus is by Sheila Butler at Trinity Episcopal Church Bloomington |

Daniel and the Lion’s Den
Episcopal Tradition Materials needed: · Labyrinth taped or painted on a canvas floor cloth. A Labyrinth is a path to the center that only has one entrance/exit, you must come back the way you went in. Go to: http://www.spiritworks.org/Resources/Labyrinth/default.htm for more information on Labyrinths · Lap boards, blank paper and a colored pencil each · Prayer books for each child · Examples of ACTS prayers on papers, one per child of each so they can make prayer books while they wait their turn at the Labyrinth. · Wall paper cut the same size as prayer papers · Stapler · Labels so they can write their title or name and put on book. · Finger labyrinths gotten from above website cut same size as prayer papers. · CD of some meditative music. Room Set up: · Children will gather in the Chapel and the Labyrinth will be set up in Mt. Ararat. Have a tape/CD player for the music in the Labyrinth room and lap boards and all other materials in the Chapel. Shepherd box: · Journal Page/Coloring page for the preschoolers · Crayons/markers · Lesson plan, Shepherds will do the prayer books Scripture Daniel 6 Goals of the rotation: 1. To learn about Lions and other large wild cats. 2. To learn the story and find it in the bible. 3. To learn about faith in God. 4. To learn about prayer. As the children arrive/openers: · Introduce yourself · Children should have picked up their name tags from bulletin board, Shepherd can get them or make them one. · Explain that this is the Episcopal Traditions workshop and today they will learn about prayer in our church. · Hand out lap boards, a blank piece of paper, a colored pencil to each child. Telling the story: Explain that the children are to put their pencil on the paper and make a doodle drawing, [demonstrate for them,] and not lift their pencil. They should continue to draw through the telling of the story. Read them the following poem version of Daniel. The Lions Weren't Hungry Last Night Written By: Unknown Copyright Unknown Find this poem/story at http://www.kididdles.com/mouseum/l030.html Responding to the story: Tell them to stop when you finish reading and put their paper beside them, we will talk about it later. Hold up a prayer book and ask if they know what it is? Hopefully most should know that it is a prayer book. Ask if they know when we use it? Hopefully some will know we use it in church during the service? Ask if they know why we use it? Hopefully some will know that we use it so we know the words to pray together. For the preschoolers this may be as far as you go with this discussion or you can try some of the older class discussion. For the K-2, explain that we find the words for all of the services the church does in this book, daily services, Sunday services, baptisms, funerals and ordaining priests and bishops just to name a few. Focus them on where in the prayer book they can find prayers they can use. Daily Devotions for Individuals and Families p. 137, Prayers and Thanksgivings p. 810 For the 3-5, have them look at the table of contents to discover what all the book contains also focus them on the Daily Devotions and Prayers and Thanksgivings. Ask them to find specific services. For all children, Ask when they pray and what prayers they say. Many children say dinner prayers and bedtime prayers. Explain that there are 4 types of prayers and we can remember them with the word ACTS. Have the following on a flip chart. A - Adoration (telling God how wonderful He is!) C – confession (telling God we’re sorry for the things we do wrong) T – thanksgiving (telling God thank you for things) S – supplication or "send help" (asking God for help for someone else or yourself) Explain that Daniel prayed to God. God always answers prayers but he doesn’t always answer the way we want. His answer may be yes, no, maybe or I have a better way. What do you think Daniel prayed for? I wonder what you would have prayed if you were Daniel? To get out of the Lion’s Den? For God to Kill the Lions? Did God answer Daniel’s prayer, how? Today we are going to experience a way to pray. In small groups we will go next door and walk in a Labyrinth. Has anyone ever walked in a Labyrinth before? Look at your drawings, if you didn’t lift your paper you sort of drew a Labyrinth, in a Labyrinth there in only one door and the path leads to the center and then you walk back over your path to get out again. Rules of walking the Labyrinth: You should walk in silence, you might find it helpful to think to yourself a phrase such as “God is good” or “Lord hear my prayer” and say it over and over in your head as you walk to help you keep your mind on God. You should stay on the path, don’t cut across. You should walk slowly, our Labyrinth is small compared to most so it won’t take long to walk but you are praying to God through your movements so you shouldn’t run. If you come up on someone, you should quietly pass them, don’t tailgate. When you get to the center you may stop quietly and listen for God and when you are ready turn around and go back the way you came. When you are out, quietly walk to the Chapel and pick someone else to come. I will play some quiet meditative music and we will go over in small groups, while you are waiting your turn or after you have finished you may make yourself an ACTS prayer book to take home and at the back will be a finger labyrinth that you may do at home. This week’s Journal question is : How does prayer fit in your life? When do you pray? Write or draw about this. · Shepherds will pass out journal papers and colored pencils for today these should be collected and put in their journal files. Take Home Message: Today we learned about prayer in the church. In order to hear God, we need to be quiet and listen. Closing Prayer: Dear God, Thank you for bringing us all together today to learn about prayer in our church and for bringing us closer to you through praying the labyrinth. Watch over us this week and keep us safe. Amen. Put TV by door and Pillows under tent. · Keep puppet theater in corner and put paper screen in place and clip on light. · Practice making some of the shadows so you are comfortable Shepherd box: · Journal Page/Coloring page for the preschoolers · Crayons/markers · Lesson plan Scripture Daniel 6 Goals of the rotation: 1. · Explain that this is the Video workshop and today we see a video about Daniel and talk about being scared. · Ask children to share times they have been scared, give everyone a chance if possible but only use about 10 minutes for this. · Hand out popcorn in coffee filter bowls to watch the movie. Telling the story: For the Preschoolers and if the Primary vote for it, show the Veggie Tales version. Stop at the end of the first story “Tales from the Crisper” and do the discussion questions below. Then show the rest of the video and do the discussion questions below. For the Juniors and the Primary if they vote for it, show the Greatest Adventure version. At the end discuss the questions below. Responding to the story: Veggie Tales: Tales from the Crisper Discussion Questions What had spooked Jr. when he went to bed? (Scary show) I wonder if any of you have ever been scared of a show on T.V.? What did Jr. learn that helped him not be afraid? (God is bigger than the Boogie man) Was Frankencelery really a monster? (No he was an actor) When we are scared what should we do? (varied, tell parents, not watch scary shows, pray to God) Veggie Tales: Daniel and the Lion’s Den What was different about this version and others you have heard this month? (varied, there is a dream that Daniel interprets(not in the bible story they hear), the lions eat pizza with Daniel, there is no rock to be sealed, the others run away instead of go to lions etc.) Why did Daniel continue to pray to God? (He obeyed God’s commandment to only pray to him) I wonder how Daniel was feeling when he was in the Lion’s Den at first?(scared) What did Daniel do when he was scared? (pray to God) Who came to help Daniel? (An angel) Greatest Adventure: Daniel and the Lion’s Den How is this story different from the versions you have heard so far? (answer vary) Daniel lived in Babylon in the palace of the King, far away from his family. Everyday he prayed to whom and for what?( To God and for his family.) Was Daniel able to explain King Darius dream? (Yes, this part is not in the bible story they hear but you might explain that Daniel actually interpreted for the King prior to Darius) Why did the King’s advisors dislike Daniel? (The King thought that Daniel was much better than the others and they were afraid the King was going to put Daniel in charge.) How did the King’s advisors react?( They schemed and planned a way to entrap Daniel. The advisors went to King Darius and suggested that all people should bow down to him (pray to him) if they didn’t, they’d be thrown into the lion’s den.) What did Daniel do when he heard this?( He prayed to God.) What happened to Daniel?( He was thrown into the lion’s den.) Did he die? Why/Why not?( No, God protected him.) Did King Darius aid Daniel? (Yes, in that he prayed to God to protect Daniel.) How did King Darius feel about being trapped by his other advisors? (He was angry and had the other advisors thrown into the lion’s den.) What is the message that we learn from Daniel? (God calls us to be faithful to Him. We should not be led astray by the appearance of power and might!) I wonder what you do when you are afraid? (answers vary) Further Reflection: Today we are going to explore how shadows are made. Sometimes we are afraid of something that appears to be something else, like when we think clothes lying over a chair is a person etc. I am going to teach you how to make shadows with your hands that look like animals. For the preschoolers you may just need to do it for them and let them guess what it is. For the older classes, if you blow up the pictures and make cards, give each child a card and let them try to make it and see if everyone can guess. Using the pictures from http://www.20kweb.com/hand_shadows.html demonstrate a shadow and allow the children to try if they want to. Do as many as you can in the time that is available, remember to stop in time to journal. Give copies of the shadow cards if you want to the children. This week’s Journal question is : What can you do when you are scared? Write or draw a picture about it. · Shepherds will pass out journal papers and colored pencils for today these should be collected and put in their journal files. Take Home Message: Today we watched a movie and talked about what to do when we are afraid. We also learned to make hand shadows. Closing Prayer: Dear God, Thank you for bringing us all together today to learn more about Daniel and things to do when we are afraid. Be with us this week and keep us safe. Amen. Children's sermon ideas for this story
http://www.christiancrafters.com/sermon_faith.html http://www.christiancrafters.com/sermon_toothpaste.html On this website contributed by Mary Funderburg She found this idea on a website, I tried to find the source and was unsuccessful. You put salt (God's people) on a plate (the world) shake a small amount of pepper on top (evil-sin-problems). Rub a plastic spoon (God) against cloth to creat static electricity. The people pray and the spoon lifts away the evil-sin-problems when you place the spoon over the top of the salt/pepper. It works, I tried it and I hope our kids will think it's neat. Only takes about five minutes. |
