JESUS IN THE TEMPLE

COMPUTER WORKSHOP

PASSAGE

Bible Story:
Luke 2:41-52
Key/Memory Verse: Luke 2:52

PURPOSE

To create graphic art for the congregation members to enjoy in their “Quest for Christ”

OBJECTIVES FOR ROTATION

After completing this Rotation, participants will be able to:

  • Locate the story in the Bible;
  • Identify the book of Luke as a New Testament Gospel;
  • Tell the story of Jesus in the temple as a young boy;
  • Explore the ways this story shows us that Jesus is human as well as divine;
  • Identify Jesus' priority to learn in the house of God and relate our need to do likewise;
  • Realize that participation in a community of faith helps us to learn our identity as a child of God;
  • Compare Mary and Joseph's search for Jesus to our own search for God's presence in our lives.

OBJECTIVES FOR WORKSHOP

  • Learn where this story is located in the Bible
  • Learn that even the young can assist others in their spiritual walks
  • Learn the story of Jesus in the temple
  • Understand how Jesus is simultaneously human and divine
  • Relate Mary and Joseph’s search for Jesus to our own searches
  • Demonstrate the children’s understanding by displaying their graphic art for the congregation

PREPARATION

Read Bible Background

Materials List

  • Color printer
  • Computers
  • KidPix software

Advance Preparation Requirements

Google an Internet image of Jesus in the Temple and save as a bitmap that can be used by each computer. Either save it to a shared folder that can be accessed by all computers on the network, or save it individually on each computer. For suggested ease of use, it may be simpler to save on individual desktops.

PRESENTATION

Open – Introduction

Introduce yourself and any new child

Open with prayer.

Say: We have very few Bible stories about Jesus as a child. What can you tell me about His childhood? Use your imaginations and compare His early life to your own! (Monitor the discussion closely to ensure it does not “jay walk” too far or take up too much time.)

Dig - Main Content

Have the class look up the correct passage, Luke 2:41-52, and take turns reading aloud allowing for discussion as they read.

When they have finished, explain to the class how there are going to create “Quest for Christ” mini posters. This is based on the “Where’s Waldo” concept. Have the class work in groups and turn their computers on. Start KidPix. The posters should be very busy and colorful. Instruct them to put thought and meaning behind their selections. Encourage them to retell the story with the different graphics they use in their mini posters.

Suggestions: temple, Mary, Joseph, Scholars, Scrolls, Bible, Doves and/or lambs (for the offerings), sandals, map, binoculars, suitcase, calendar, and so forth.

Monitor the children’s time and progress closely. Print their posters on glossy paper.

Reflect – Closure

Ask the following:

Do you think Jesus was disobedient to his parents?

Do you think Jesus was disobedient to God?

What do you think the main lesson we should learn from this story is?

In what ways is the story of His parent’s search for Jesus like our search for Jesus?

Hang the posters in the hallway, or any highly visible area, for the rest of the congregation to enjoy. It might be helpful to type an explanation/instruction sheet to hang close to the posters.

Repeat the memory verse together. Close in prayer.

Additional Suggestions

For the more advanced classes, encourage them to create a list of objects to search for and the meaning behind each of the objects.
