ELIJAH AND THE WIDOW OF ZAREPHETH ROTATION SET ROTATION SET SUMMARY SCRIPTURE PASSAGE 1 Kings 17:1-24 KEY/MEMORY VERSE 1 Kings 17:24 OBJECTIVES Children will: Find the story of Elijah in the Old Testament of the Bible; Know that Elijah was a prophet of God: that prophets were God’s chosen messengers; Learn that when we are obedient, God provides; Understand that Elijah’s time away hiding was a time to strengthen his trust in God; bigger challenges were coming in Elijah’s life; Contrast Elijah and the woman’s view of God at different points in the story. Ask how Elijah helped the widow come to know God and compare this to our own experiences in helping people come to know God. MATERIAL IN THIS ROTATION SET BIBLE BACKGROUND [CAROL HULBERT] Reflect on the story of Elijah and the Widow of Zarephath, the Scripture Passage, and the Memory Verse. BIBLE BACKGROUND ADDENDUM [NEIL MACQUEEN] Consider additional information related to the Scripture passage and story of Elijah and the Widow of Zarephath. ART [CARMEN PETER] Emphasize God’s unending faithfulness, love, and protection by wrapping a Styrofoam[TM] figure with “unending” yarn. CINEMA I[CAROL HULBERT] View an “Elijah” video to learn about his life, how he came to fully trust God, and how the widow came to have faith in God. CINEMA II [STEPHANIE SMITH] Watch a segment of “The Lion King” to discover how God strengthened Elijah for the upcoming challenges in his life. COMPUTER [NEIL MACQUEEN] Use the “Elijah & Jonah” CD software to discover how Elijah, as well as the widow, learned to trust God’s promises. COOKING [KIM TRIMBOLI] Make sourdough starter to review the story of Elijah and the widow and to learn how God provided for Elijah as well as how God provides for us. CREATIVE WRITING[JAYMIE DERDEN] Explore the feelings of Elijah, as well as the widow, through involvement in a variety of creative writing activities. DRAMA [AMY CRANE] Re-tell the story to explore the emotions that Elijah and the widow experienced in their relationships with God. GAMES [Zola Griffin] Participate in a relay game, as well as an obstacle course, to focus on the concepts of prophets and the relationship between obedience and provision. MISSION [JULIE BURTON] Learn about hunger and use a giving calendar to respond to the needs. PUPPETRY [AMY CRANE] Construct puppets and act out the story of Elijah and the ravens to remember that Elijah trusted God to provide for his needs.
