JESUS AND PETER: DO YOU LOVE ME?PASSAGE Bible Story John 21:1-17 Background Scripture passages for teacher preparation include: John 13:33, 36-38 John 18:15-18, 25-27 Key/Memory Verse John 21:15-17 PURPOSE Objectives Students will: Locate the story of Peter’s denial and restoration in the Bible, learning that the story is in the New Testament Gospel of John Retell the story in their own words. Contrast Jesus’ love for Peter, even after Peter denied knowing him. Jesus was giving Peter another chance. Discover that we, too, do wrong things sometimes – but God forgives us and gives us second chances. Explore Peter’s statement of faith – “Yes, I love you.” Recognize that Statements of Faith are hollow words without Statements of Action. Develop their own Statement of Faith and Action, pledging support to Jesus. Connect Jesus’ breakfast with his disciples, and his questions to Peter with our own “breakfast with Jesus” – communion – and understand that sacrament as a pledge to Jesus that we will minister to others in Christ’s name. Objectives for Prayer Workshop To reflect on the story using prayer. To learn different ways of praying. PREPARATION Read Bible Background. Materials List
Advance Preparation Requirements Set up room with an area or a center for each prayer station. Duplicate a copy of the instruction sheet for each prayer station. Place instruction sheet and supplies in each station. PRESENTATION Open – Introduction Have the students introduce themselves and write their name on one of the heart cutouts for the Prayer Partner station. Have a student put the box/basket of hearts in the correct place. Be sure and introduce yourself. Open by saying the Lord's Prayer together. Dig - Main Content Does anyone know what we're studying this rotation? We're talking about Jesus & Peter. What is the story of Jesus & Peter (let the students tell you the story, prompting them with questions if necessary.) Today we're going to do a prayer workshop. The room is setup in centers. At each center there are specific instructions on what to do. You can do the centers in any order. It is possible that you will not be able to do all centers. Point out the locations of each center. Send the students out to the various stations. PRAYING THE BIBLE STATION Prayerfully open the Bible. Read Matthew 25:31-46. Think about our memory verse this rotation: "Do you love me? Then feed my sheep." John 21:15-17 Think about how the story in Matthew tells us to feed God's sheep. Read Matthew 25:37-39 again, replacing the "we" of the righteous with "I", so that you are asking God the question yourself. Then, read Matthew 25:40 again, hearing what God has to say to you. Prayerfully close the Bible. BOUNCING BLESSINGS STATION Did you know that you can pray when you're moving? Paul told us that we're to pray all ways, so you can definitely pray when moving. In our story, Jesus, Peter, and the others had breakfast together. Before we eat, we usually say Grace, asking God to bless the food. Today, we're going to ask God to bless people, not food. Think of 5 people that you want to pray for. Jump up and down 10 times for each person as you pray for God to bless them. PRAYING THE LABYRINTH A labyrinth is like a maze, but there's only one path. You pray as you follow the path to the center and pray on the way back out. Some labyrinths are big enough to walk through. This one is just big enough for you to follow the path with your finger. Start on the opening to the outside. As you move towards the center, think about how awful Peter felt after he denied Jesus 3 times and then Jesus died. In the center, think how confused Peter was after Jesus rose from the dead. He was excited because Jesus was alive! But he felt bad because he hadn't been brave enough to admit knowing Jesus. As you move back towards the outside, think how Peter felt when he realized Jesus forgave him. As you finish the labyrinth, realize that God forgives you when you do something wrong, as long as you ask for forgiveness. PRAYER PARTNERS STATION Reach into the basket and draw a heart. Read the name of the person on the heart. Pray for that person. It can be a simple "Dear God, please bless ______." Take the heart home with you to remind you to pray for that person every day this week. CAST YOUR CARES STATION Peter and his friends fished with a net like the one you see here, but much bigger. They threw the net out on the water and dragged it back through the water, hoping to catch fish. Just like they threw the net on the water, we're supposed to throw our problems on Jesus and let him carry them. Take a marker and a strip of fabric. Prayerfully think of a problem that you have or that someone you know has. Write that problem on the fabric and then tie it on the net. Pray to God letting Him know that you are trusting Him with that problem now. FORGIVENESS STATION All of us know people who are mean or who are bullies. In our story this rotation, Jesus forgave Peter for the bad thing Peter had done (denying Jesus, his friend and teacher). It can be very hard to forgive people who have been mean to us. In the sand (or on the white board) write the name of a person who was mean to you or something mean that was done to you. While you stare at what you wrote, pray for the person. Ask God to help you forgive them and to show them God's love. Erase what you wrote. Pray for the person again. Ask God to help you forgive them and to show them God's love. PRAYING WITH MUSIC STATION Start the music player. Follow along with the lyrics printed below and listen prayerfully: http://www.christianrocklyrics.com/castingcrowns/ifwearethebody.php> After the song ends: What does Jesus' instruction to "Feed my sheep" have to do with this song? What can you do to be more like the body of Christ? JOURNALING Because Peter denied Jesus, Peter felt that he was separated from Jesus. In our story, Jesus shows that he is still there for Peter. Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me. -- Revelation 3:20 Write a letter to God telling how it makes you feel that God will always be there, asking to be a part of your life, no matter what you may do. Reflect - Closure Go around the room and give the children time to share Joys (happy things) and Concerns (sad things). Close with prayer. If you wish, you may pray like this: Thank you God, for the chance to be here today and learn more about you. Help us to remember to you are with us and we can talk to you always and in many ways. In your name we pray. Amen. ADDITIONAL SUGGESTIONS This workshop should be one of the last in the rotation so most students are knowledgeable of the story. Adaptations - Younger Children This workshop works better with children who can read. If you have children who can't read, you can go from station to station as a large group so the adult can do the reading. For younger children, use a simpler labyrinth. You may also want to make copies and let them trace it with a crayon so they don't get lost. CONTRIBUTOR: Jo Oehrlein |
