JESUS & PETER: DO YOU LOVE ME?

ROTATION SET SUMMARY

SCRIPTURE PASSAGE

John 21:1-17

Background Scripture passages for teacher preparation include:

John 13:33, 36-38

John 18:15-18, 25-27

KEY VERSE

John 21:15-17

OBJECTIVES

Students will:

Locate the story of Peter’s denial and restoration in the Bible, learning that the story is in the New Testament Gospel of John.

Retell the story in their own words.

Contrast Jesus’ love for Peter, even after Peter denied knowing him. Jesus was giving Peter another chance.

Discover that we, too, do wrong things sometimes – but God forgives us and gives us second chances.

Explore Peter’s statement of faith – “Yes, I love you.”

Recognize that Statements of Faith are hollow words without Statements of Action.

Develop their own Statement of Faith and Action, pledging support to Jesus.

Connect Jesus’ breakfast with his disciples, and his questions to Peter with our own “breakfast with Jesus” – communion – and understand that sacrament as a pledge to Jesus that we will minister to others in Christ’s name.

MATERIAL IN THIS ROTATION SET

BIBLE BACKGROUND [Neil MacQueen]

Reflect on the post-resurrection story of Jesus and Peter, the Scripture passage, and the memory verse.

ART [Carol Hulbert]

Use the Japanese principal of Notan -- a way of describing dark and light, or positive and negative space, as an element of design -- in a project to create a cut paper picture collage that examines the positive and negative aspects of this story: Peter’s denial and Peter’s statement of faith.

BANNERS/TEXTILES [Jaymie Derden]

Construct “Personal Pledge” banners to exhibit ways to show love for Jesus by tending God’s sheep.

COOKING [2] [Julie Burton]

Prepare honey-glazed fish fillets to recreate the story of Jesus and Peter on the seashore following the resurrection.

COOKING [1] [Joy Feemster]

Review the sequence of the story by adding symbolic ingredients to snack mix to eat and to share with others while retelling the lesson.

CREATIVE WRITING [Cissy Green]

Compose pages of a class book, using water color pencils to illustrate the ideas, and retell the story of Jesus and Peter.

DRAMA [Stephanie Smith]

Develop a shadow drama that involves the participants acting out the Bible story behind a sheet.

GAMES[Jo Oehrlein]

Discover aspects of the story by telling it in sequence with picture cards and playing a variety of games including Fishing Tag, Mad Lib, Memory Verse Circles, Sequence Races, and Trivia.

MISSIONSJulie Burton]

Assemble “Gifts of the Heart” kits for Church World Service to help tend God’s flock around the world.

PRAYER [Jo Oehrlein]

Experience the Bible story through prayer activities by moving to each of eight stations including: Bouncing Blessings, Casting Your Cares, Forgiveness, Journaling, Prayer Partners, Praying the Bible, Praying the Labyrinth, Praying with Music.

PUPPETRY [Amy Crane]

Create clothespin puppets and use a scripted drama and an improvisation to retell the Bible story and to make a commitment to affirming love for Jesus through action.

SCIENCE [Jo Oehrlein]

Participate in two experiments: one that demonstrates cohesion as two streams of water become one to illustrate that Jesus and Peter were reunited and the other that uses kinetic energy and a marble to highlight that Peter had to take action as a result of his three statements of faith.
